Railway Platforms - A place for people to browse their phones
Sorry it’s been
quite a lot of time since the last post.
If you want
to build a railway station { even though you
don’t need to } you need places for the passengers to wait until the
trains arrive and board the train and de-board it. These places are called platforms and there
are many types of platforms. They are:
Spanish solution
boarding:
The term Spanish solution derives from its original use in several stations of
the Madrid Metro and Barcelona Metro. The idea of Spanish solution is to maximize
the boarding and deboarding capacity of a train by using the doors on both
sides of the train. Basically, there are 3 platforms with two on each side of a
track. Usually, the inner platform is used for de-boarding and the outer
platforms are used for boarding.
Island platform:
As the name suggests, an Island platform is a platform that is sandwiched between the two tracks. The platform, which is in the middle of the station handles all the traffic of the station. This type of platform design is used a lot in Indian suburban railway systems. This mostly uses less space and is the platform type in cross-platform interchanges. { I will be making a post about it later)
Side
platforms:
Side platforms are the oldest platform
design that has ever existed and is the most
used metros. This design involves two platforms of a decent size. One platform handles
left hand traffic, usually the left-hand side, while another handles right hand
traffic, usually the right hand side. There is more space in this design than
island platforms but not to the same levels as Spanish solution. This also
means, if the infrastructure is there, a train can change tracks in the station
itself, instead of leaving the train station to do it, like island platforms but track
changing has nothing to do with platform design.
Bay platforms Bay platforms are basically side platforms with a terminus track. (That's it)
As you see, there are many ways to build place
where people always look at their phones. (Anyway, it doesn't matter) No other joke? OK, so there are 14 commas in
this post. Hope that's a good enough joke
Thank-you
Nice. I never realized there are so many variations in platforms
